Sustainable Money: A Systems View of Sustainable Economies

A systems view of sustainable economies. The global integration of manufacturing, trade, and industrial finance requires the local and regional integration of everything else. We will look at tools for maintaining adequate local liquidity: community banking, local (complementary) currencies, and Time Banking. We will also introduce some options for systematic sustainable local investment. David Brancaccio's PBS video Fixing the Future is a major resource.

Sonoma County Waste Management Agency

Recycling, hazardous waste disposal and composting information for residents and businesses in Sonoma County.
Social Media

About the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency:
The Sonoma County Waste Management Agency, formed in April 1992, is the joint powers authority of the nine incorporated cities and the County of Sonoma. The mission of the agency is waste diversion required by State law AB939 to reduce the amount of landfilled waste in the following areas: municipal yard debris, wood waste, household hazardous waste, education and planning.

Since 1988, Sonoma County has reduced its per capita trash by half. However, Sonoma County could still achieve significantly higher diversion as it is estimated that about 70% of what is currently landfilledcould be recovered for recycling or for composting.

Agency programs include:

  •  Municipal composting program where curbside yard debris and veggie scraps are turned into compost at the Central Disposal Site by the Agency's contractor, Sonoma Compost Company.
  •  Hazardous waste program for residents and businesses for proper disposal of items like paint, garden chemicals, automotive fluids, etc.
  • Eco-Desk 565-DESK(3375) Answering questions about recycling, hazardous waste and other disposal issues.

  • Sonoma County Recycling Guide (English and Spanish versions) The Guide is a 32-pages comprehensive resource about Hazardous Waste Disposal options, CRV redemption sites for bottles & cans, curbside recycling, used motor oil drop-off recycling, A-Z Reuse & Recycling and much more! Call the Eco-Desk to get a printed copy or visit our web site to view the online page-flip Guide at http://www.recyclenow.org/recycling/recycling_guide.asp. Also, look for the Guide printed in the AT&T Yellow Pages under Recycling.
  •  Monthly electronic recycling events to make it convenient to drop off computer equipment, consumer electronics, TVs, office equipment and kitchen/household appliances.

New State Recycling Requirement for businesses, including government offices & schools, & multifamily dwellings

With the passage of AB 341, businesses are required to recycle on and after July 1, 2012. The purpose of the law is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting commercial solid waste to recycling efforts. According to the State, the commercial sector generates nearly three fourths of the solid waste in California. What can be recycled will vary by business. However, this effort targets mainly single-stream recycling where paper and bottles and cans are mixed together.

Free resources to help you comply with the new law. The Sonoma County Waste Management Agency offers a variety of free services and assistance to help you recycle and compost properly. Available to you are staff visits to assess your individual waste needs and help you save money, Sonoma County Recycling Guide English and/or Spanish versions, posters for single-stream recycling and recycling containers for indoor use. B Lab and the community of Certified B Corporations

Helping businesses to measure and communicate about their social and environmental impact
Social Media

B Lab is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. One of B Lab's primary initiatives is to build a community of Certified B Corporations to make it easier for all of us to tell the difference between "good companies" and just good marketing.  By enabling consumers, investors, potential employees, and policy makers to support these high-impact companies we can make sure that these businesses can scale - along with their impact.

B Lab's other two initiatives focus on supporting this growing ecosystem of companies creating good.  The first is the development of the Global Impact Investing Ratings System (GIIRS) in order to drive institutional investment to high impact global private equity investments; you can learn more about this investor-focused system at www.giirs.org.   Our third initiative is to advance supportive public policies, including creation of a new corporate form -- like the recently passed Benefit Corp legislation in Vermont, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia.  Please see our policy page for more updates on this part of our work.

B Lab is a 501(c)3 governed by a process of broad, transparent multi-stakeholder engagement. The Board of Directors has convened two independent Standards Advisory Councils that oversees the certification ratings and auditing requirements for B Corporations and GIIRS rated companies in both developed and emerging markets.

For more information about how B Lab supports the growing community of Certified B Corporations, read about our National B Corp Brand Campaign which is reaching 17 million values-driven consumers through print and digital media partners, Mother Earth News, Natural Home, Utne Reader, Herb Companion, Sustainable Industries, Care2.com.
