The Center for Climate Protection creates model programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for communities everywhere.

The mission of the Center for Climate Protection is to inspire, align, and mobilize action in response to the climate crisis. We work with business, government, youth and the broader community to advance practical, science-based solutions for significant greenhouse gas emission reductions.

The Center for Climate Protection constantly seeks solutions commensurate with the scale of the problem. Although it is important for individuals to take action like changing their light bulbs, we need solutions for change at the speed and scale required by science. Our strategic approach is to help implement policies and incentives that make it easier for everyone to do the right thing.

We know that local action can move the world. By creating model programs in communities that are willing to be pioneers, we are spreading solutions that can make a major impact on global climate change.

Sustainability Achievements:
The Center for Climate Protection helped create a local power provider to buy and generate cleaner electricity than what we currently receive. Known as Sonoma Clean Power, this program will provide tremendous advantages such as rate stability, stimulation of local the economy, green job creation, and energy policy that can cause an explosion of renewable energy development. We helped drive the steering committee for the feasibility study and successfully navigated adoption of the program in five cities and Sonoma County. The new power provider began operation in May 2014 and has exceeded expectations in terms of saving Sonoma County over $6 million by sourcing and pursuing further development of local renewable energy.
Sustainability Challenges:
"Building a low-carbon economy without harming its vibrancy is s state-wide challenge at which California excels,” according to Jerry Brown. "It is bold and it is absolutely necessary if we are to have any chance of stopping potentially catastrophic changes to our climate system.”
