Sustainable Manufacturing in the Personal Care Industry
Social Media

Here at EO, we see manufacturing as a key element of true artistry. We are passionate about making personal care products that nurture the people that use them, respect the people that make them and honor the planet that we all share. Every product we create is researched and developed right here. With our own manufacturing facility we are able to innovate business practices that focus on sustainability, transparency and the greater good. As a certified B Corporation, we think that people and the planet are more important than net profits. We refuse to make a product that we wouldn’t use on our own children or grandchildren. That means no synthetic fragrances or any ingredient that has been linked to allergies, sickness and cancer. We use pure essential oils to scent our products; they smell great and have soothing and uplifting effects on our minds and spirits as well as our bodies. At EO,  we make real products made from real plants for real people.

Sustainability Achievements:
With our own manufacturing facility we are able to innovate business practices and we have pioneered personal care manufacturing with our OTC and Organic Certified facility. In 2004, we became a certified organic manufacturer by the Coalition of Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). This certification is typically used for food but because there are no certifications in the personal care or cosmetics industry for organic ingredients, we chose to follow the guidelines for food. In 2011, we became the first personal care company to be certified non-GMO by the Non-GMO Verified Project. Since there are still no regulations on cosmetics or personal care items when it comes to certification of ingredients, we sought the certification used for food. We have partnered with the Leaping Bunny organization to certify that our products are not tested on animals and that the ingredients we use do not harm animals in labs or in the wild. We aim to use 100% PCR packaging whenever possible and we use a closed loop water cooling system which saves tens of thousands of gallons of water every year. Recycling is a huge opportunity for us to reduce our footprint. In 2014 alone we recycled 40 tons of cardboard, 13 tons of plastic, 7 tons of metal, 1 ton of plastic wrap and 64 tons of wood pallets. We also installed motion sensor LED lights and began purchasing Green e-Energy Certified renewable energy to offset 51% of the electricity used in our manufacturing and operations. We will move to 100% Green e-Energy Certified renewable energy in 2015. With all of these steps in place we're right on track to be Zero Waste Certified in 2016.
Sustainability Challenges:
As business continues to increase, our challenge as a sustainable manufacturer is finding ways to maintain or reduce our waste stream. EO experienced 56% growth in 2014 and the subsequent increase in volume of waste provided new challenges and opportunities for creative recycling. Last year our recycling volume increase by 300% and we managed to eliminate 1000 lbs of non-recyclable plastic from the refuse stream. A big part of our sustainability initiative is on our packaging. Most of our packaging is made from 100% Post Consumer Recycled plastic. All of our packaging is BPA Free. We are constantly working with our packaging partners to find new and better ways to package our products. With hundreds of bottles, it can be challenging to find distributors that carry the size or shape we need for a new product in 100% PCR. We use our volume orders and undying persistence to convince all of our suppliers to use PCR. We work tirelessly towards the goal of 100% PCR in all of our packaging.
